Nadella highlighted the ongoing transformation of builders into AI developers, a shift that necessitates access to the right resources to make the transition as smooth as possible.
“To support this shift to scale, we are excited to partner with GitHub to empower their more than 100 million developers to build AI applications directly from GitHub.com with seamless integrations with Codespaces and Microsoft Visual Studio Code,”
This collaboration is poised to bring Azure AI’s leading model selection to developers through GitHub Models, offering simple APIs that enable the creation of responsible, production-ready AI applications.

The introduction of GitHub Models marks a new chapter, offering developers direct access to a broader array of AI models, including Meta’s Llama 3.1, OpenAI’s GPT-4o, and Microsoft’s Phi-3, among others.
Mario Rodriguez, Senior Vice-President of Product at GitHub, underscored the significance of this initiative, saying,
“Every single app that is probably going to be created in the coming months and years is going to have intelligence attached to it as well. It’s no longer enough for you to have an application; you’re going to have to have an application that is powered by intelligence.”
Rodriguez highlighted that GitHub Models aims to reduce the friction developers face when experimenting with and integrating AI models into their applications.
“We just wanted to make it extremely simple. You know, AI is not a fad, it’s here to stay. So we just have to get that friction to be zero if we want to continue to have that market grow,” Rodriguez added.
With GitHub Models, developers can now access and experiment with AI models directly within the GitHub platform using their existing GitHub identity.
This streamlined approach eliminates the need for developers to juggle multiple accounts and platforms, making it easier for them to focus on innovation.
From Experimentation to Enterprise AI Deployment
While reducing friction is a key goal, GitHub Models also provides a clear path for developers to transition from experimentation to the production deployment of AI-powered applications.

GitHub Models aims to help developers navigate these challenges by providing an environment for testing and comparison. “You really have to rely on your offline evaluation and online evaluation to make the best decision,” Rodriguez noted, highlighting the importance of hands-on experimentation.
