Intel and Amazon Web Services Forge Next-Gen AI Partnership

In a significant move for the tech industry, Intel Corp. and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar co-investment to develop custom chip designs. This expanded collaboration builds on their longstanding relationship and aims to power advanced AI applications and enhance U.S.-based semiconductor manufacturing.

Intel's Commitment to Ohio and U.S. Manufacturing

Earlier this week, Intel reaffirmed its commitment to its $28 billion project in New Albany, Ohio, despite recent financial challenges. CEO Pat Gelsinger assured that the company remains focused on its U.S. manufacturing investments in Arizona, Oregon, New Mexico, and Ohio. The collaboration with Amazon strengthens these efforts, with both companies dedicated to fueling AI innovation.

“We remain committed to our U.S. manufacturing investments,” said Gelsinger, underlining the importance of Intel’s advanced chip technology in supporting AI workloads.

Intel’s partnership with Amazon comes as the company navigates a period of workforce reductions and financial restructuring. Despite these challenges, the company remains on track to complete its Ohio factories by 2026-2027, with operations expected to begin by 2027-2028.

The Expanded Intel-AWS Collaboration: Driving AI Innovation

The co-investment between Intel and AWS marks a pivotal moment for both companies. Intel will produce AI fabric chips on its most advanced Intel 18A process node, while also building a custom Xeon 6 chip on Intel 3. These cutting-edge chips are designed to accelerate AI performance and power a wide range of workloads in AWS data centers.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, emphasized the significance of this collaboration: “By co-developing next-generation AI fabric chips on Intel 18A, we continue our long-standing partnership and empower our joint customers with new AI capabilities.”

This partnership highlights both companies' commitment to driving innovation in AI and cloud infrastructure, with Intel’s chip design expertise complementing AWS’s comprehensive cloud services. Together, they are set to revolutionize AI-powered applications and U.S.-based semiconductor production.

Boosting Ohio’s Role in AI and Semiconductor Manufacturing

As part of this collaboration, Intel and AWS are playing a crucial role in positioning Ohio as a leader in the AI revolution. AWS has committed to investing $7.8 billion to expand its data center operations in central Ohio, bringing its total investment in the state to over $10.3 billion since 2015. This expanded collaboration supports both companies' mission to create a vibrant AI ecosystem in Ohio and beyond.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed excitement about the news, stating, “This collaboration between Intel and AWS is a great development for U.S.-based manufacturing and solidifying Ohio as a leader in AI.”

The new AI fabric chips and custom processors are expected to be produced in Intel’s New Albany facility, further strengthening Ohio’s role as a key hub for semiconductor manufacturing.

Federal Support: Intel’s Push for U.S. Semiconductor Independence

In addition to the AWS partnership, Intel continues to receive significant federal support under the CHIPS and Science Act, a major legislative push to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to U.S. soil. Intel recently qualified for an additional $3 billion in aid to produce chips for the U.S. military, adding to the $8.5 billion in grants and $11 billion in low-cost loans it received earlier this year.

These federal incentives are a key part of Intel’s strategy to boost domestic production of critical semiconductor components, which have largely been manufactured overseas in recent decades.

The Future of Intel and AWS: Continued Innovation and Growth

Looking forward, Intel and AWS have plans to explore further designs, potentially building chips based on Intel 18A and future process nodes like Intel 18AP and Intel 14A, which will be produced at Intel’s Ohio facilities. Their collaboration has a history of over 18 years, beginning with the launch of the first Amazon EC2 instance featuring Intel chips in 2006. This strong partnership continues to empower organizations of all sizes, enabling them to leverage powerful AI applications and cloud infrastructure.

Both companies are committed to fostering innovation and delivering advanced solutions for their customers while supporting a sustainable U.S.-based AI supply chain.
