Microsoft Recall Feature Returns 🔄, AI and Human-Centered Leadership 🤝

Open tech roles have risen from a 2023 low of ~163,000 to over 232,000 in March 2025. That’s a 42.7% increase from the bottom, though still 51.3% below the peak....

Reimagining Work: How AI and Human-Centered Leadership Are Shaping the Future of Jobs

Across industries, a noticeable shift is emerging: CEOs and HR leaders are moving away from reactive strategies like layoffs and embracing more human-centered approaches to workplace transformation. Rather than seeing technology—particularly AI—as a replacement for workers, many are using it as a tool to empower employees, boost adaptability, and foster a resilient culture. This isn't just a philosophical shift—it's a practical, performance-oriented one gaining traction from boardrooms to team meetings.

From Layoffs to Leveraging AI: A Smarter Leadership Model

In a bold move, Shopify's CEO encouraged teams to explore AI tools before hiring new staff. This reflects a growing trend in tech: prioritizing automation and efficiency without rushing into layoffs. It's a strategy that respects the workforce, builds resilience, and fosters a culture of innovation.

Could this shift toward AI-augmented teams be the key to building more agile, future-proof organizations without sacrificing human talent?

Totally. AI can boost productivity while allowing businesses to retain talent and morale. It's about enhancing capacity, not replacing people.

Microsoft HR's Vision: Empowering Through Agentic AI

Christopher Fernandez, Chief AI Officer of Microsoft HR, shares this vision in his recent interview with UNLEASH. Rather than focusing solely on productivity, Microsoft is using AI agents to empower employees, amplify their domain knowledge, and drive personal career growth.

Key initiatives include:

  • A 4D workflow model (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and spherical) to understand how people work.

  • Creation of task-based and enterprise agents by HR professionals themselves.

  • Tools like Copilot Studio that democratize AI development within teams.

AI should be co-created with employees, not imposed on them," says Fernandez. This human-centered approach leads to higher adoption, innovation, and employee ownership.

This strategy mirrors Shopify’s decision: it’s not about fewer people; it’s about better equipped people.

The Rebound of Tech Hiring: Signs of Recovery

According to TrueUp’s job trends, the tech job market has begun to recover:

Open tech roles have risen from a 2023 low of ~163,000 to over 232,000 in March 2025.

That’s a 42.7% increase from the bottom, though still 51.3% below the peak.

Notably, the recovery is selective: AI, ML, and GenAI roles are in highest demand. This aligns perfectly with the AI-first strategies being adopted across the sector.

Workforce Priorities: Insights from PwC’s Hopes and Fears Survey 2024

PwC’s latest global survey of 56,000 workers from 50 countries reveals a critical truth: employees crave purpose, fair compensation, flexibility, and upskilling opportunities—but many aren’t getting them.

Key analytics

  • 82% of employees rate fair pay as extremely important, but only ~60% believe they’re fairly compensated.

  • 67% of workers considering a job change are strongly prioritizing upskilling.

  • 52% report financial stress, though 45% now say they have money left over monthly—up from 38% in 2023.

  • Only 46% agree that their employer offers opportunities to learn skills beneficial to their careers.

  • GenAI optimism is high: 76% believe it offers new skill-building opportunities, and 90% of daily users expect efficiency boosts.

Experience Gaps: There’s a clear disconnect between what employees value and what they experience—especially around fair pay, fulfilling work, and flexibility. These gaps directly impact engagement, adaptability, and openness to change.

Strategic Response:

Addressing financial stress through competitive, livable wages improves well-being and productivity.

Flexibility supports better work–life balance and mental clarity.

Purpose-driven roles give employees a sense of contribution—to both their company and society.

Simplifying workplace tech with integrated systems and tools like digital assistants reduces overwhelm and training fatigue.

Rethinking Resilience in the Age of AI

These trends—from Shopify's strategic use of AI to Microsoft’s agentic approach and PwC’s data-backed insights—all point to a new definition of resilience. It's no longer just about weathering change—it's about designing with your people, not around them.

As businesses rethink their models, the smartest ones won’t ask, "How do we cut costs fast?" Instead, they’ll ask:

How do we give our people the tools, flexibility, and purpose they need to thrive in a world transformed by AI?

That’s the future of work worth building.

💬 OpenAI Developments

OpenAI countersues Elon Musk over ‘unlawful harassment’ of company

OpenAI aims to enhance its computer infrastructure to provide more powerful tools for its estimated 500 million weekly ChatGPT users. The company has faced internal turmoil, notably in 2023 when CEO Sam Altman was briefly ousted over communication issues but was swiftly reinstated following employee backlash.

OpenAI gets ready to launch GPT-4.1

OpenAI faced delays in announcing GPT-5 due to integration challenges, though CEO Sam Altman hinted it could surpass expectations. Meanwhile, new models like o3 and o4 Mini are expected soon, with recent updates focusing on enhancements to ChatGPT’s memory tool rather than new model releases.

OpenAI slashes AI model safety testing time

OpenAI has significantly reduced the time and resources allocated to safety testing for its AI models, raising concerns among staff and experts that powerful technologies are being rushed to market without adequate safeguards. Driven by competitive pressures, the company now allows days instead of months for evaluations, with critics warning this approach may underestimate serious risks and compromise public safety.

🚀 Tech Industry Moves

Microsoft has relaunched its AI-powered Recall feature, which takes frequent screenshots of users' activity to help them search through past files, messages, and browsing history, now available in preview for select users with AI PCs. While Microsoft emphasizes local storage, opt-in use, and privacy controls, critics remain concerned about potential misuse, data security, and the capture of information from others without their consent.

A Microsoft Research study found that top AI models like OpenAI’s o3-mini and Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet struggle with debugging tasks, completing less than half of the challenges in a software benchmark, largely due to limited exposure to real-world debugging processes in training data. Despite growing use of AI in coding, the findings underscore that current models still lag behind experienced human developers in problem-solving and logic, highlighting the need for specialized training data and caution in fully automating programming tasks.

Anthropic has launched Claude Max, a new subscription tier priced at $100 or $200 per month, to address power users’ frustrations with hitting usage limits on the $20 Pro plan, especially due to Claude’s large context window reprocessing entire conversations. The Max plan offers significantly more usage, priority access, and early feature releases, positioning it as a competitive alternative to OpenAI's premium offering while helping Anthropic manage compute costs and drive revenue.

Block has integrated Claude into Databricks through its internal AI agent, codename goose, enabling employees across roles to automate workflows, access data without technical skills, and significantly boost productivity—saving engineers 8–10+ hours weekly and doubling adoption in a month. This agentic AI system empowers non-technical staff to solve complex problems, supports secure and scalable model deployment, and reflects Block’s broader vision of democratizing data access and accelerating innovation across the organization.

Google has announced it will adopt Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) for its Gemini AI models and SDK, following OpenAI’s recent move, signaling growing industry alignment around MCP as a standard for connecting AI to external data sources. MCP enables two-way data integration between AI models and business tools, allowing developers to build more interactive, task-capable AI applications, with companies like Block, Replit, and Sourcegraph already on board.

Google Cloud announced major advancements in AI at Cloud Next 25, including the launch of its powerful 7th-gen TPU Ironwood, expanded generative media models on Vertex AI, and new tools like Gemini in Workspace and Agentspace to streamline AI agent development and adoption. With over four million developers using Gemini and a 20x increase in Vertex AI usage, Google is scaling its AI ecosystem to deliver greater productivity, accessibility, and real-world impact across organizations globally.
