When AI Lays Off the World, Who's Left to Buy the Product?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently described AI agents as "junior employees"—already performing entry-level tasks with growing independence. Major firms like Meta and Google cut entry-level hiring by 25% in 2023–24, and McKinsey warns AI could replace 375 million jobs by 2030. Some experts even foresee 50% of white-collar entry jobs vanishing within five years.
That raises a serious question: if AI is taking over the roles meant for beginners, where will fresh graduates go? With the bottom rung of the career ladder disappearing, how does anyone even enter the workforce anymore? The U.S. Federal Reserve reported that the unemployment rate for recent college graduates jumped to 5.8% in early 2025—the highest since 2021—with underemployment rising sharply to 41.2%. While companies may benefit from reduced labor costs, the broader economic implications are concerning. As more people lose jobs, consumer spending power diminishes, potentially leading to decreased demand for goods and services.
And here's even the bigger concern, when AI starts replacing workers, who’s left with income to fuel the economy? Without strong safety nets or mass retraining—which remains too slow and expensive—the danger isn't just job loss. It's economic collapse from shrinking consumer demand. Economic growth relies heavily on consumer spending. If AI-driven automation leads to widespread unemployment, who will have the income to purchase products? This paradox challenges the sustainability of an economy increasingly dominated by automation. Moreover, wealth generated by AI tends to concentrate among those who own the technology, exacerbating income inequality. This shift could lead to a society divided between AI owners and those dependent on them, raising concerns about social and economic stability. We’re not asking if there’s a tipping point—we’re wondering how close we already are.

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has released an updated version of its R1 model, R1-0528, which some researchers suggest may have been trained using outputs from Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro. Developer Sam Paech observed that R1-0528 exhibits linguistic patterns similar to Gemini, indicating potential use of model distillation techniques, a practice that has previously drawn scrutiny from companies like OpenAI.
Meta signed a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to source nuclear power from Illinois’ Clinton plant, supporting its rising AI energy demands. The agreement helps fund the plant’s relicensing and highlights big tech’s growing reliance on clean energy to power AI infrastructure.
